History Of Glass Art

ABOUT THE BOOK

BREAD, GLASS AND HISTORY is a new look at popular glass of the 19th and 20th Century connected to the social and economic background of which it was a part. The role played by industrial design and the creative genius of the American glass industry in recognizing, establishing and changing consumer taste is emphasized.

“Glass of Faith and Beauty”, the first of a series of three books, is devoted to the appreciation and historic background of Early American Pattern Glass and 20th Century glass inspired by spiritual and religious subjects. This includes a comprehensive list of traditional bread plates bearing the motto from the Lord’s Prayer, “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” as well as glass tributes and memorials to church and philanthropic leaders. Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders were honored. Patriotic and family values inspired unique glass designs. Religious symbols and themes from the Bible are found on many antique glass patterns. Time honored traditional prayers decorated childrens dishes of the Baby Boom period. Easter egg and seder plates marked Holy Days. Objects of personal devotion, such as crucifix candlesticks and idealistic madonnas from American and European manufacturers, are a valued part of glass history. This includes Viking’s unique late 20th Century series of small desktop religious glass sculpture. A non-sectarian respectful review of a neglected area of glass research and collecting.
